mums rule!

Thursday 4 June 2009

Do you know why we’re not valued? … I'm sick of this sort of thing happening!

When I got caught up in a fight about the education department's duty of care to my son earlier, they all looked shocked...why??? was it because I was eloquent and knew my rights??? they even asked me what I did, I said I was a full time mum..then someone (who is still living...just!) said "but you're not JUST a mum are you?" ermmm.... what???? JUST a mum!!!

When you’re out and when someone asks you what you do…how many of you know whats going to happen when you say, I’m a mum, how many are proud to say I’m a carer (I am!!!). More importantly how many of you have said those words and seen the look of disinterest in the person's eyes. And I'm sorry to say it, especially if it's a man who's asked (and before you slap me ...not ALL men, I know a few very special ones follow my blog...but you are rarer than you think).

Of course being just a mum and a carer means you couldn’t possibly have anything of interest to say. I’m sure they’ll soon be scuttling off just in case you start talking about nappy changing, children’s books or god forbid…childbirth or breastfeeding, after all, that’s all we could possibly know anything about because eeek! we're mums!

No, its true, we couldn’t possibly be working, doing degrees, couldn’t possibly be authors, couldn’t possibly speak two languages, run our own businesses, some of us doing it single handedly, and I know mums that know more about advertising, marketing, taxes, finances than most people in the room….nope, we're mums, carers…see ya!

Of course that person may have more luck next time, the next person they ask may be a teacher, a receptionist, a lawyer, a doctor, a chef…you know, someone who really contributes something to our society (because of course, mums don't! all we're doing is raising the next set of people who will effectively run the world!!!), they may find someone who doesn't sit at home all day drinking tea, eating cake and watching daytime TV…thank goodness, this time they might find someone who has something interesting to say.

Of course, you may walk past them ten minutes later and hear them talking about Eastenders as if it's real life…what a shame you missed out on that intellectual conversation…after all, I for one wouldn’t be able to hold my own in a conversation about any of the soaps on TV…I don’t watch them, I’m far too busy editing, doing my tax returns, arranging hospital appointments and making sure my kids, husband and customers are happy to sit on my arse and watch TV!

Of all the stuff I do, being a mum is THE most important, the one thing I care about failing in, the one thing I will not mess up...because its the most important job in the world!!!

So when someone asks…say it, say I’m a MUM! I’m a carer, and you know what, if they look bored, feel free to tell them that there’s no point in having a conversation with you because YOU are way out of their league, there’s no way they could understand someone as complex as you…they don’t hold a candle to you and I hope you all know that.

Right, I’m off to beat someone up…LOL!!!

At the Abilities Expo, we were talking to a disability advocate. My man said, "Her mom is a force to be seen." It was awesome to hear his recognition of the woman who raised me.

Being a "mum"...the best job in the universe!

Being a mom is a full time job. There are no days off. No overtime pay. You can not go home at the end of a day and resume tomorrow. It is a 24/7 lifetime commitment. In all fairness so is being a dad. Although I do know there are differences.

Parenting is the hardest job in the world sometimes. But it is soooo worth it.

Next time some imbecile says something like that to you, tell them to go home and ask their own mom that question.

Mom's have the hardest and most unappreciated job on the planet. In fact I think if people had top be moms for a day they would look differently at the job description.

I know I started to appreciate everything my mom did for me after I had to care for three kids when I lived in florida

AMEN Sal! Moms are not respected, and seems you have to work full-time or part-time to be considered worthy!

The hardest 5 years of my life were when we had our own clinic and we opened it when my youngest was in preschool.

I'm proud to be a SAHM!!

    God Bless!

Being a mother has been the most difficult, most interesting and most rewarding thing I've ever done. Once upon a time I was a neuro-nurse.

Being a mom I feel is one of the hardest jobs out there and I don't feel every woman is cut out for it. It is sad how being a mom is looked at as not a big deal.

J.J. then i aspire to be like your mum, i think i'm getting there lol!

Linda, I agree, and we get to do it without training...eek!

Tom, good idea, i wish i thought of that. its not just mums is it, its parenting all round, I wonder if stay at home dads are looked at in the same way...

Riley, thats it isn't it, its being appreciated, aknowledged, very rare!

Maureen, well obviously, we just sit with out feet up reading magazines and eating chocolates LOL!!!

Cozyflier, I'm proud too, now if only we could get about 80% of the population to realise it too!!!

Randi, that made me laugh, my most overused saying, is either 'well if i don't do it, it doesn't get done' or 'if you want something done right, do it yourself' LOL!

Dena, thanks as usual, where would the world be without us???

Decadent, this proves it, neuro nurse has to be hard, i bet people think your life is simpler now....how wrong they are!

Dragon, thats exactly how i feel, its not for everyone, the same way as being a doctor or librarian isn't, but even if we're outstanding at it (which of course we are), we are SOOO not aknowledged on the whole, its very sad, and what is more important...i can't think of anything!

Actually a stay at home dad is viewed as a bum. Even in our modern era, men are still expected to be the bread winner for the family. So, to stay at home and play Mr. Mom would definitely not be viewed in a positive light.

Even though I have my part-time job during the school year as a school nurse I always say my full-time job is being a Mom and Wife and then give my school nurse talk..... because I don't get any time off from my REAL job.... the one God entrusts me to..... to raise a good and precious child of His!!!
