shootin' hoops!

Saturday 16 May 2009

Deion has been made captain of his wheelchair basketball team. So I thought I'd take some photos of him and his team mates in action to mark the momentus occasion.

Go Deion, Go Deion, Go Deion!!!!

He is very proud of himself. And quite rightly so.

Their Coach is a really nice guy called Steve, who plays in the England Wheelchair basketball team, he's so great with the kids, they all love him to bits.

Obviously there are a whole different set of rules and plays...

Here are a few pictures of them completing a set play, You can't tell, but Deion is yelling his head off at about a billion decibels in eerrmmmmm...'encouragement' here!!

Apparently, that is one of his most important duties as captain!

Deions really committed now, he goes every Saturday morning and has an absolutely brilliant time.

Clubs are so important for all kids, I am a huge fan of structured activities... it's such an important part of a child social development and social life, I hate Deion having to miss out. It's hard to find good clubs that are wheelchair friendly, let alone wheelchair based as it were.

Of course there are a few extra issues, there are more than the usual amount of hospital appointments and stays among the team, and for the more fragile kids, more illness, but the club goes ahead no matter whether there are two or twelve kids.

Its also a great excuse for the mums to sit down for an hour with a coffee!!!

Yay Deion! That is awesome. What a work out that is. I get tired just watching those kids. A friend of the family plays on an all star team here and she is really good. Looks like fun!

HI trojan, we were lucky with this one, one of the teachers at deions school organises an ordinary basketball club....so with a bit of moaning from me about deion was havign trouble keeping up, she asked around with the local physios to make sure people would give it a go...she did the leg work and found the coach and us mums spread the word...

it is great, and Deion loves it, I'm so proud i could burst. as deion is captain, the coach tells him to warm 'em all up, and deion leads the stretches, its so lovely!!!

    Hi Deion,
Just to say congratulations on becoming Captain of your team.!Excellent stuff! So England here we come ,next stop!
Bet your Mum and Dad are chuffed to mint balls .Is Cocoa now your official team mascot then? That would be cool ,don't you think? If Cocoa is a bit shy you could always have Bertie!
Am very touched that you have asked me to be your friend on facebook, but as yet I have been unable to work out how to do it!! Harry my son put me on there but somehow they wont accept the password he gave me .A lot of old codgers like me are rubbish on computers so it is probably me rather than the computer but will try and get Harry to sort it out when he is next down and then let the Captain of the team know!!
Well done again ,let me know how the team gets on won't you?
I am very proud to be your friend .
    Much love Wendy and Bertie(woof)

Awesome! Deion looks like he was having a blast! Loved the pictures!

I totally agree about team sports!
I have a post in the works (many started...few completed) about my 4year olds first experience in team sport, the ever popular t-ball! He had a great time and the progress over 8 weeks was amazing in outlook and team spirit! Awesome experience!

He looks like he's having a great time. I'm glad that he has a good coach, having rotten coaches is I think what drove the final nail in the coffin for my "love" of competitive sports.

Oh, and for an activity that Deion can do in a wheelchair, have fun with, exercise his mind, and be competitive with others. May I suggest Magic:The gathering trading card game. You probably have a comics/gaming store in your area that Deion could go to. The tournaments are on friday nights generally, but Deion could just get some of the cards to start. It's a really fun game, and a great group of people who are very accepting of disabilities generally.
