School success...ish!

Monday 25 May 2009

I am thrilled to report that Deion is going to have all he needs, in place to start his new school in September….I’m so relieved I can’t tell you.

The proper toilets and hygiene area will be built and ready, he’ll have proper height adjustable tables in every class, he will have access to everything. The school couldn’t be more helpful, and although Lewisham are trying to throw the odd spanner in the works every now and then…it all good, so many people are backing us, I think they know they’ve lost this one.

The fire drill is a funny one, apparently they think it would be okay to leave my son in a burning building while everyone else evacuates…all because there is a “SAFE” area at the top of one of the stairwells….well, I guess I don’t have to tell you I wasn’t too happy about it…and besides…is any area a SAFE area in a burning building….hmmm, let me think???

ding ding ding....round three hundred and six!!!

Congratulations! It's always nice when the school pitches in to help.

In So. Cal., we have earthquake drills. I wore full-length braces for a while and during a drill, the teacher put me in the closet, while everyone got under their desks. I didn't think to complain but I thought it was a pretty stupid place to be in case of an actual earthquake.

OMG...how inconciderate, were you in there alone too? how frightening for a child...things are certainly getting better and i'm (almost) sure we will get there one day!!!

Unfortunately, it will continue to be a fight for you :-(

I recommend sending a written note explaining your sons needs to his teachers for the first day of school. An email would probably be even better. It would document that you really sent a reminder of his needs.

It is really too bad that our world hasn't caught up to the needs of our special children. Get the fire drill situation figured out. I wonder what the principal would do if it was his child?

When we were kids and had a 'nuclear' bomb warning, we got under our desks and put our hands and arms over our heads. I don't think that would have saved us!

well there are special inflatables you can buy, they inflate to make huge...well bed type things that you can literally lay a child in and they pull down the stairs, they are great and what they use in another nearby specail needs school....unfortunately, its all about the cost...as usual, but i wont be backing down, he wont be spending a day in a school without an adequate evacuation plan!! i wouldn't be able to relax, or live with myself if anything happened!

I find it more than a bit disconcerting that the so-called "professionals" who work with our children could even think such a thing was acceptable. And, um, which staff member will be accompanying Deion to that "safe" place, who will be responsible for assisting him in the event of a real fire/emergency? In case it isn't, you might ned to have things spelled out to that level of detail. God forbid the day actually came and person X thought person Y was responsible and vice-versa. *shudder*

That is great! But, don't sleep on the fire drill thing! You know how school administrations can be!

Wow! That is wonderful! Well, except for the whole fire drill thing. A safe area during a fire sounds pretty silly!

Good for you "Mama Bear". If we don't watch out for our kids, no one will! Another great reminder to all of us moms. NEVER BACK DOWN when it comes to our children.

Well done and its great news to read. I guess your sucess should inspire other parents who have children with special needs to get the support that they deserve.
