Never did me any harm

Saturday 23 May 2009

I saw a new TV show advertised yesterday, I don't watch much TV, so don't know if its an old or new thing. Basically, the show is about a family who go back to living how they did in the seventies when the parents were growing up.

My kids were horrified at the thought of it, but I thought what a great experiment it would be. Imagine, no video games, no DVDs, video films, three channels on the TV, no mobiles, no money for designer trainers and clothes...

On the advert a boy of about 15/16 actually cries his eyes out when his dad takes his TV and computer games away from him....

I think it would certainly teach kids about real life a bit more. Lets be honest, our kids are a tad spoilt...oh, I know we have no-one to blame but ourselves, but I for one would love to see how my kids react to being a kid in the seventies.

I loved growing up in the 70's!!! I think the kids of today are missing out on a great (simpler) way of life.

I was an adult in the 70's, so I remember growing up in the 50's and 60's. My dad always was the first in the neighborhood to get the 'new things.' We had the first TV...a big old B&W that we put tin foil on the antenna's to get a better picture. He loved a new car, and we would probably had a lot more $ after he died if he hadn't bought new cars all the time.

I do have to say, they bought their home for about $7K, and lived in it until death took mom, and then dad lived in a home. They raised 5 kids in a SMALL 2 bedroom with only ONE bath. They finally converted the garage into a bedroom for us 3 girls.

Thanks, Sally, for giving me a place to write my memories. I guess I need to do this on my blog, but...

Oh, I remember where I was going with my last comment.

Daddy would have been the 1st to get all the new gadgets today if he lived in this time!

I would actually love to go back to live in the 70s. Things were so much simpler then! It would probably be really refreshing! But I would miss my computer and your blog ha!

How fun! But I'd need a TV so I could watch The Brady Bunch in real time again.

I would fear for my life if I did that! LOL!

Linda, we didn't even get a color TV until 1972! I grew up in a 3 bedroom house with 1 bathroom and we had 8 kids (well, 7 at home... mom was pregnant with #8 when #1 entered the convent). Dad was lucky enough to get a company car every few years.

LOL, great comments, I guess even in the 70's people were saying that things were more complicated, too advanced....i know i would hate to go back for good...i'd be a total hypocrite and keep the things that make my life easier or more interesting, and get rid of all the stuff that makes kids stay in, or sit in front of the TV!!!! LOL!!

i would miss board games with the kids more than TV...I could live without computer games, TV a second bathroom, a dishwasher....but i would hate to lose my computer or mobile!!!!

p.s. Linda, can't wait to read that post...

I think I would like to try this for a while! Maybe for a week this summer! We need to be a little less plugged in!

Sally, when we talk with our kids about how things were when we were growing up, in the 70's, they think it was the dark ages!!!!

It would be a fun experiment, but I agree, I would miss my computer and cell!

Actually once a year my boys are forced to go a whole week without any of the modern comforts. We go camping in July and none of the kids are allowed to bring anything electronic with them. No phones, no video games, no MP3 players. In fact the only thing with batteries is the flash lights. They are never bored for things to do. They find things to play.

Side note to Linda: My dad made sure that he had a remote for the TV. Of course that remote was whichever kid was closest. "Hey you, go switch it to channel 2!" lol

I think it's a great concept. My memories from the 70's were all positive as we didn't know what we were missing. Sign me up for the show!

I too grew up in the 70s and totally get what you mean, although i have to say my "poor" kids are mostly made to live like that anyway, aside from having the computer & Wii.
I have an inkling that we are all actually heading into such a bad recession that we will be living like the 70s soon anyway. Our kids better get used to it!

My son would freak! Now that I think of it, I would probably freak. I don't think we got a microwave in our house until the late 70's. I can't LIVE without my microwave. No computer? No blogging?!! No cell phones? Yes definitely... I would be crying too.
