Monopoly should be registered as a dangerous sport!

Tuesday 19 May 2009

Is it just my family, or do you need danger money to play board games in your house.

It started years ago, Dave is so competitive, that if he's losing at scrabble (which he invariably does)...he could have nothing but and A and an O be 370 points behind and still take an hour to take his go...convinced he can still pull it out of the bag and win the game...delusional much??? I bought a scrabble timer to try to combat Dave's endless turns...but after the first go, Dave ignored the timer...and then argued that as he never agreed to use it, he did not have to adhere to its timing....after his second three hour turn I threw it against the wall and stamped on it!!!

Well we decided yesterday (misguidedly) to have a family board game and settled on Monopoly. There was almost a punch up, the arguing was fierce, it was combative, loud, i got a headache...and this was just to decide who was going to be the car...by the time the actually game started I was thinking the kids protective karate gear was a good idea!!!

Full contact Monopoly? Interesting concept. I am sure if you pitch the idea to the right person, you may just have the next reality television show!

As for Scrabble, I have it on my cell phone. Maybe it is something to consider for Dave so he can practice? Just a thought. Otherwise tell him to call with his letters. I am pretty good at word games. LOL

LOL nice. Yeah, I have never been good at scrabble either. I am not much of a board game fan but shaun is huge into them. Mostly, it is apples to apples for me with my friends or uno for me and shaun. :-)

We absolutely cannot play board games in my household...we all tend to get freakishly competitive and it just isn't condusive with friendly family relationships.

So funny : ). I am going to try to play UNO tonight with everyone. It is so hard to find games on my boys level. And by boys I mean my kid AND my husband....

This brought back memories of (the game) Trouble and my dad. We got it for Christmas one year and he played, lost, and tossed the board into the backyard.

Over the years, 3 more boards got tossed until we learned never to ask him to play.

absolutely hate the game Monopoly. I always said I coudl get divorced over Monoploly. My ex (haha we didn't get divorced because of that)was such a cut throat player that years ago, I refused to play with him again.
Scrabble was a different story as was Trivial Pursuit. We played those games often.

My husband and I have to have SPECIAL rules for Scrabble just to preserve marital harmony. No challenging. Open dictionary. It's totally saved us from sleeping in separate rooms.

LOL - I think Dave and my hubby Jeff must be distant relatives! Or maybe it's a guy thing? I have wanted to throw the game board many times out of impatience at hi ridiculously long turns.

BTW, I always get a chuckle out of the geographical quirks in your speech. I love the way you "talk".

Sally - based on your experience with monopoly I would like to challenge your family to a game with my childhood family - my brother and sister.

I grew up with Monopoly games that were conducted like business in the 'Godfather'. "leave the gun, take the canolis" We always got rid of the weak players early on in the game and then proceeded to destroy our opponent. I smile just thinking about it.

It's very difficult to get anyone to play Monopoly with me now, sadly enough. My husband just shakes his head and my little ones are too young to understand the importance of the game.

    Sally,

As long as you bring up the subject of Monopoly...if you want a knee slapping chuckle you have to check out Carol Burnett show about Monopoly. It is hilarious! Go to youtube and search on "Carol Burnett Monopoly" Make sure you watch both Parts...you will die from laugher.

Ha! This is exactly why family game night no longer exists! Monopoly is a big NO No in our house. The hubby drives me crazy because he somehow happens to ALWAYS win and by a long shot at that.
