Knowing when NOT to make jokes!

Friday 15 May 2009

I do have a bad habit of making jokes when I am nervous or worried about something….its a sort of nervous energy I guess.

So I had my breast appointment yesterday, and maybe joking to my husband about the fact that three men and one woman felt my breasts…and, if I’m not mistaken, then saying something along the lines of ‘not bad for one day...’ yep, maybe not the best idea!!! He now thinks I'm trivialising it, I think that's the way to go!!!

Well, it was that or say that I was scared shitless, because the first guy, had a feel and looked deep in thought for a moment, and said he had to call his consultant in…then the consultant had a feel and said he wanted to speak to a colleague, and I had to make a choice to either be worried or think that my breasts were so phenomenal, that they thought everyone should have a look!!!!

So I’m going with the phenomenal breast theory!!!

I went of for the scan let the lady squish me into the most uncomfortable contraption known to man….the dreaded mammogram, then I got to go back for the doctor to examine me again.

I don’t think, even in the earliest days of Dave and I dating has my bra been on and off so often…

So now it’s a waiting game (not easy for possibly the least patient person in England), yes the lump is there, yes probably the lump is too hard to be a cyst, but I’m just going to presume its benign…otherwise I may just tip over the edge from mildly hysterical to totally losing the plot!!!

The doctors, nurses and the clinic in general was actually really friendly, and everyone was as gentle as they could be, I have a ton of leaflets and the numbers of support groups…

I shall keep you posted!!!

I hate being poked and prodded by multiple doctors. I hope everything turns out benign and I'm glad you have the support!

Hang in there, Sally. I also hope it is just a benign cyst.

    Blessings to you, and yours.

Don't fret over making jokes. You do whatever you need to do for YOU. If joking takes away some of the anxiety, even if only briefly, then it is worth it!

As I said, my wife had 2 surgeries for breast cancer and several more scares since then.

    Hi Sal,
Of course, you have phenomenal breasts and that is why they all had a go......what a job opportunity for a guy with a breast fetish (or in your case, guys plural, as you seemed to have cornered the market my friend) If I was Dave, I would make sure there wasn't a glint in any of their eyes while they examined you!!!No ,you are not trivializing it you are doing the sensible thing and going with the flow, until you know anything further. So, if seeing the funny side gets you through you go for it girl!!Like I said before I was whipped in to have one of my lumps removed when I was 20 weeks pregnant with Ben,both mother and son are fine over 30 years later! I do remember the panic that went through my mind though at the time ,but like you ,as I had children ,my days were so hectic there was very little time to dwell on it all thank goodness.

Chin up girl you WILL be fine, regardless of what they tell you because you are YOU!!
Have faith in yourself and the ability to cope as you ARE the best mum in the world and since when has any medic EVER won a round with you !! Never my friend!!! Much love and big hugs Wendy xxxxxx

oh Cammie, i didn't mean to scare you, its okay really, it's uncomfortable more than anything, and if you have small bobbies, not so bad as the bigger they are, the harder it clamps (well i guess so???)the good thing, is, it's over quite quickly...got i don't know if i've helped or made it worse now...sorry....

I am the same way, I will make jokes when I get nervous or even angry for that matter. Actually I make jokes all the time, but I guess they are considered less apropriate at those nervous times. LOL I would have probably made jokes about that too. Hope for the best for you!

I know its a serious and its a scary situation, but I did laugh during your post so I must apologise.... and i will going to confession cause i have sinned and I enjoyed it. How many breast do these doctors fee in a week and are they screened?

p.s I hope its you will be OK at the end. If the doctors thought it was really serious i assume they would act quickly.

Humor is the best way to handle these things! When the choice is laugh or cry...laugh usually wins.
    Thinking of you!!!
