SIZE 10 DOES NOT EXIST!

Friday 17 April 2009

What is happening with clothing sizes these days???

I am a size 10, I have always been a size 10, which is a bloody miracle seeing as I know for a fact that I am bigger now than before I had the kids…I’m not blind, I have a mirror, I have a tape measure, and while I am not about to share those measurements with you, trust me when I say, they are larger in number now.

I set out to prove my point…so I dug out this pair of jeans that I had in about 1988 (yes, I never throw anything away on the premise if you keep it long enough it will come back into fashion)….and this proved my point…the old size 10 jeans barely got up past my knees, the new size 10 jeans fit like a glove…

Photographic proof…..

I guess it’s a ploy by clothing manufacturers to make us feel better…but sizes should be sizes shouldn’t they???

Or, of course, as my son suggests...I should get a life!!!!!!

this fascinates me, as i have suspected as much, but never stopped to get scientific proof, as you have. on one hand, i want to expose them, but on the other hand, if i did that, i would be wearing size 82 jeans, i'm afraid.

so maybe you should just throw out the old ones, and proudly embrace your size 10.

I agree.......I've been saying that they are "re-sizing" sizes and thanks for the proof!!

So....I could technically be a size four and nobody would even know it!

Boy, that "new math" they teach in school has even hit the fashion industry? And you worry about listing measurements? By the time I got finished figuring out the new math and converting from metric, I would be so lost anyway!

Seriously! I have always thought something was up with the sizes..but never had an older pair to compare! I KNEW IT! What a dirty trick they are playing on all of us!

I'd also like to know what's with the disappearing sizes. Trying to find a dress for my wife (who is not fat by any stretch of the imagination, and is actually quite svelte right now), but she is a size 12, just from like breasts and height (5'10", we're gonna have tall kids).

And we go to the stores for shirts, dresses, and/or pants and almost everything is size 6 and below. After 6, they jump up like 14-16, and if we actually find a 12, it either doesn't fit right, or it was designed by a blind person. No kidding, I've seen colors that were not meant to be put on dresses.

yeah, i find this too...whats with all the mini sizes that wouldn't fit a barbie doll...i don't see that many tiny people about, but they stock a ridiculous amount of these sizes...you can get a 6 no problem, want a normal size forget it, and they certainly don't make dresses allowing for a woman to have boobs!

no wonder we all have complexes about our weight!

It also varies from store to store. In Anne Taylor, for example, I can wear a size four. In other stores it is an eight. So even though Ann Taylor costs more, I will usually shell out the dough just so I can wear a smaller size...yes, I'm a little petty like that (lol).

Yes, I completely agree. And then you will have two of the exact same sizes, same style, same brand and one is a lot tighter then the other. That doesn't make any sense either.

I used to be a size 3, they must have totally done a reverse move cause I am now a 9. I am comfortable with it. I would love to tell people I am a 3 though and watch their bewildered faces as they size me up thinking "there is no WAY she is a 3!" bahahaha

Ahahahaah, I knew it I knew that clothing companies were doing stuff like this. Of course I don't want to know what size I am really.

Even at my skinniest I wasn't a size 10. Being fat is the worst feeling. I am glad you don't have to experience it Sally...

Actually...I'm not so sure about that... Back in 88, the waist of your jeans would have been closer to your bellybutton, which is a smaller circumference than your hips where our jeans are all closer to now. But hey, if it truly is a conspiracy, I'm definitely on board! :)

Melissa, i love you, you may be onto something here...so I am now going to presume, I am the same size, but jeans are cut differently...superb!

Yeah, I kind of figured something was up with the sizes but I also about crapped myself when I realized I'm a size 4 or 6 here, but when I tried to order something from Australia, my measurements were really that of a size 10. I did not buy that item of clothing, just so ya know.

Congrats to you for being the same size over the years!!

I know there is a conspiracy in the industry. However, I thought it was working in the opposite direction!! I to hang on to clothes from days gone by, and now my daughter is fitting into them!!!

It is so true! My daughter is a size 2 but she buys a size 0. It actually makes her mad because it is hard to find size 0 but she told me the clothing manufacturers downsize everything now to make people feel better.
I could see how it could work for the self esteem until you figure it out and then feel bigger than ever - ugh!
