Who Was I?

Sunday 29 March 2009

Do you look back and think about your pre child life?

I don’t ever remember a time when I wasn’t a mum, I know I had a whole life before, and I know it was full with family and work and socialising. But I can’t imagine what filled my heart and my time to the capacity that being a parent does.

So many times my mum used to say to me ‘when you’re a mum you’ll understand’ and I do. And I can’t remember myself before.

I can’t imagine waking up and my first thought being me, I can’t imagine going to bed without the kids to kiss goodnight.

Its incredible, and I often wonder who I was back then.

I think some who become mothers feel it to the full as you do, and then it can be a challenge to remember what it was like before. I don't think all mothers feel this. I've also observed that we tend to relate to children of different ages differently. I was more in tune with our kids as infants than as toddlers. But I also was not very well equipped to be a mom of two who were just 17 months apart. I was overwhelmed! Thankfully, now that they're almost 28 and 27, we are incredibly close.

It is fascinating how parenthood shapes us.

yes, I treasured the infant years the most, when they all really needed me, I had three under three and loved it, as they get older, they need me less. deion still needs me more, but even he is getting more dependant.

i know parenthood has made me who I am today.

oh girl... what sweet words... i feel the same way. i don't really remember my pre-kid life, and i don't miss it AT ALL. i'm not very good at doing the mom things (cooking, art projects, etc), but i am good at feeling the mom feelings (love, love, LOVE).

A friend not long ago, while trying to help me visualize myself in her shoes, said, "imagine you don't have any kids and..."

    I said, "That's impossible!"

I remember my life before children and it was a good one, but I'm changed now by their existence. I'm not like the woman I was before children. My thoughts are different. My opinions are different. Everything is different, because I am a mother.

Beautiful sentiments Sally. Kids make our life more fulfilling if its good, and if its bad then they give us a reason to live/smile..

I think your whole perspective on life changes when first become a mom. I know mine did. And yes, I remember hearing the same thing and I do see exactly what my mom means now.
